OCU posts 86-63 romp past Bacone

Eighth-ranked Stars limit Bacone to 17.9 percent shooting in first half

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pounded Bacone 86-63 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Lou Dunbar, a junior from Seabrook, Texas, paced OCU with 26 points. The Stars, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 15-5, 6-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Dunbar collected six rebounds and three assists, shooting 4-for-11 from 3-point range in his follow-up to his 50-point outburst Thursday. OCU's Tyler Alderman, a senior from Fishers, Ind., posted 20 points and nine rebounds while hitting 10 of his 16 shots from the field.
Walter Rickett, a junior from Dallas, provided the Stars with 14 points and four rebounds, while Ryan Wiley, a junior from Arcadia, Calif., produced his first double-double for OCU with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jonathan Reed, a junior from Powder Springs, Ga., dished out a career-best 12 assists to go with four points, six rebounds and four steals.
Oklahoma City improved upon a 37.1 percent field-goal percentage from the first half, hitting 61.1 percent from the field in the second. The Stars shot 49.3 percent and held Bacone to 30.8 percent shooting from the field. OCU had a 58-31 rebounding advantage.
"A much better second half I thought than it was the first half," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "I was really proud of our defense in the first half. We did a really good job of sticking to the game plan of the things we worked on to put us in position. We were very careless with the basketball. We were just getting sped up trying to make plays early rather than being patient. We picked it up in the second half and got some really good play out of our bench."
Late in the first half, Wiley stole the ball and dunked to put OCU on top 31-14. Bacone climbed back into the game with an 8-0 run. In the second period, Brandon Chatman nailed a 3-pointer to cut Bacone's deficit to 41-35 with 15:06 left.
Oklahoma City rebuilt its advantage with a 10-0 surge midway through the second half. Wiley's jumper capped the burst and put the Stars ahead 65-47 with 8:10 remaining.
Wiley became the first Star besides Alderman or Smith to record a double-double this season.
"He's getting a lot better," Patel said of Wiley. "I think Ryan Wiley's the best rebounder on our team. It hurts him a bit playing behind Xavier Smith and playing behind Tyler Alderman. He hadn't been getting the minutes he would if he weren't playing behind those two guys. He had a chance to play today with X and Tyler getting into foul trouble. He stepped up big for us today."
The Stars meet Southwestern Christian at 8 p.m. Thursday in Bethany, Okla.
