OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire and cruised to a 106-41 victory over St. Gregory's Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I, started the game on a 32-0 run, shooting 12-for-17 during that span. St. Gregory's missed its first eight shots and turned the ball over 10 times before getting on the scoreboard. OCU improved to 15-2, 6-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
"We put a lot of pressure on the ball early," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "Then that pressure led to steals and early easy layups. It helped get our confidence up, and we were able to use that confidence when we were shooting shots from the outside."
Daniela Galindo and Daniela Wallen both made 11 shots for the Stars. Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., provided Oklahoma City with 25 points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals in the contest, while Wallen scored 24 points, grabbed four rebounds, had four steals and blocked a shot.
OCU outscored St. Gregory's 62-14 in points in the paint, 45-6 in points off turnovers and 30-3 in fast break points. The Stars set a school record for points after three quarters with 90.
"We came out focused on just playing one play at a time rather than one quarter or one half at a time," Overton said. "We also were able to take care of the ball, make easy plays and get the ball in the basket early and often tonight."
Allison Frey, a junior from Mustang, Okla., scored a season-high 21 points off the bench to go along with six rebounds. JoHanna Beathard, a freshman from Fletcher, Okla., grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go along with six points and one blocked shot.
As a team, OCU shot 75 percent from the floor in the first quarter and 52.5 percent in the game while the Cavaliers shot just 25.9 percent. The Stars largest lead in the game was 69 points when the score was 101-32.
Oklahoma City will head to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on Texas Wesleyan Saturday at 3 p.m.
