Wayland Baptist hands Stars 78-72 loss

OCU falls for first time since Nov. 12, 2016

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University's rally fell short in a 78-72 loss to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Monday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center.
Daniela Wallen fueled the Stars with 33 points. Oklahoma City, ranked eighth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, went to 14-2, 5-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Wayland Baptist (14-2, 5-1 SAC) halted OCU's 13-game winning streak, dealing the Stars their first league loss of the season. Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) won 63-58 over OCU on Nov. 12, 2016 in Siloam Springs, Ark.
Wallen, a senior from Caracas, Venezuela, topped 30 points for the fifth time this season while picking up eight rebounds and six steals. Wallen shot 13-for-13 from the free-throw line.
The Stars reduced their deficit to 70-68 as Alexis Hill sank free throws with 2:42 to go. Maci Merket of Wayland Baptist responded with a 3-pointer. Wallen's jumper cut Wayland Baptist's lead to 73-70 at the 1:29 mark.
Hill nailed a pair of foul shots to slice OCU's hole to 75-72 with nine seconds left. Shayla Monreal hit three free throws to seal the outcome.
Jade Jones gave Wayland Baptist its largest lead at 68-55 with a jumper with 7:34 remaining.
The Stars' Daniela Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., added 10 points and five steals. Mariana Duran, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, contributed eight points, five rebounds and two steals, while Hill, a junior from Byng, Okla., added eight points and five rebounds for Oklahoma City.
OCU faces St. Gregory's at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
