OCU stymies Wayland Baptist 6-1

Stars rebound after falling 5-2 in first game of doubleheader

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University blew past Wayland Baptist (Texas) 6-1 after dropping the first game of a doubleheader 5-2 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
J.J. Bissell and Joe Haddox hit home runs for OCU in the first game, while Mark Simon turned in a three-hit, complete-game pitching effort for the Stars in the second game. Oklahoma City improved to 32-16, 13-7 in Sooner Athletic Conference baseball.
In the second game, OCU plated five runs in the sixth inning to break up a 1-1 tie. Bissell smacked a double into right field to bring in Jared Baker, who led off the inning with a double off the left-field wall.
Wayland Baptist intentionally walked Joe Haddox to load the bases for Dilon Argo. Argo hammered a triple into the corner of right field to clear the bases and put the Stars ahead 5-1. Argo reached home on Landon Coon's double to right-center field.
In the second inning, Hunter Marcum lined a base hit off shortstop Will Bass' glove to score Baker.
Wayland Baptist managed three hits, including Jake Doyle's fourth-inning solo home run, off Simon. Simon (6-4) kept Wayland Baptist from reaching second base. Simon, a junior right-hander from Houston, struck out 14 in his fourth complete-game outing of the season. He logged 114 pitches.
Marcum, a senior from Purcell, Okla., went 2-for-2 and drove in a run, while Baker, a junior from Edmond, Okla., went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Coon, a senior from Dale, Okla., was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the first game, Bissell, a senior from Fort Collins, Colo., launched a solo shot that cleared the left-center field wall for a 1-0 OCU second-inning lead.
Haddox led off the third with his first home run for OCU. Haddox, a senior from Moore, Okla., belted a solo blast beyond the right-center field wall to cut Wayland Baptist's lead to 3-2.
Ernesto Lizardi's third-inning RBI single proved to be the game-winning hit. Wayland Baptist's Tyler Adams and Kevin Torres combined to retire the final 14 Stars in order.
OCU meets Wayland Baptist at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
