Stars dominate St. Gregory's in doubleheader

OCU cruise by Cavaliers in matchup between the two top teams in nation

OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University pummeled St. Gregory's 11-2 and 11-0 in a matchup of the top two teams in the nation on Tuesday night at Ann Lacy Stadium.
OCU's Leslie Miller slugged two home runs and drove in six RBIs in the doubleheader, while starters Georgia Wall and Abby Meador threw complete games and held the Cavaliers to five hits. The Stars improved to 46-1 overall and 17-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. St. Gregory's, ranked second in NAIA softball, dropped to 33-5 and 19-3 in the SAC.
In game one, Oklahoma City got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning as Jaci Smith stole home on a snap throw to third from the Cavaliers' catcher. Smith reached on a single to left field and advanced to third on a Kyndra Holasek double. Miller scored Holasek with a single through the right side of the infield to give the Stars an early 2-0 lead.
The Stars added two runs in the third inning on a Holasek RBI triple and a RBI groundout by Miller.
In the fifth inning, St. Gregory's Samantha Plott hit a two-out RBI double to left field in the top of the frame to cut the OCU lead to 4-1, however the Stars answered in the bottom half with a grand slam home run by Madison Ellis to stretch to lead to 8-1.
The Cavaliers added a run in the top of the sixth inning but OCU retaliated with three runs in the bottom frame. Kali Pugh led off the inning with a double to right-center field and scored in the next at-bat as Smith drilled a double to the same location. After a groundout by Holasek, Miller cranked a two-run home run over the right-center field wall to make it a 11-2 OCU advantage.
Wall allowed four hits and two runs, while recording six strikeouts and moving to 14-0 on the season. SGU's Bryn Houlton fell to 11-2 on the season.
Ellis, Holasek and Miller each recorded two-hit games and accounted for nine of the Stars' 10 RBIs.
In game two, the Stars built an early 2-0 lead with single-run first and second innings. Miller's single in the first inning plated Holasek, while Shelbi Legg's single to center field scored Laci Joyner
The Stars batted around in the bottom of the third inning and extended their lead to 8-0 with a six-run outburst. Miller hit a leadoff solo blast over the left-center field wall. Ellis drew a walk in the next at-bat and scored on a double by Legg. Stephanie Koishor brought Legg in to score on a double to left field that prompted SGU to pull starter Ashli Hafford for Houlton.  After the switch, Samantha Stallbaumer hit a bunt-single and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Pugh followed with a two-run single and scored in the next at-bat on Smith's double to left field.
OCU continued its offensive onslaught in the bottom of the fourth inning as Koishor smacked a three-run home run to make it an 11-0 Stars lead.
Oklahoma City's Abby Meador surrendered one hit over five innings pitched and fanned eight batters as she improved to 19-0 on the season.
Miller finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, while Koishor went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs. Legg and Stallbaumer each notched three-hit games.
The Stars travel to play conference foe Bacone in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Thursday in Muskogee, Okla.
