Wayland Baptist rallies past Stars 71-58

OCU led for 26 of the game's 40 minutes

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University fell short in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament title game as Wayland Baptist (Texas) won 71-58 on Saturday at the Sheaffer Center.
The Stars (20-8) secured one of the SAC's NAIA Division I Tournament bids by advancing to the SAC Tournament championship game. Catherine Kruschke and Daniela Wallen made the all-tournament team for 17th-ranked OCU.
No. 12-ranked Wayland Baptist took its first SAC Tournament championship since 1998. Laura Castillo of Wayland Baptist became the tournament most valuable player.
The NAIA Tournament pairings will be announced Wednesday. Oklahoma City will advance to its 19th consecutive and 22nd overall national tournament. The eight-time national champion Stars captured the past two national titles.
Wallen and Mariana Duran topped OCU with 14 points each Saturday. Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, posted her 13th double-double of the season as she added 14 rebounds. Duran, a junior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, picked up five assists and two steals.
Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., supplied the Stars with 11 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals, and Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., notched eight points and seven rebounds.
Duran's basket gave OCU its largest lead of 25-17 with 6:55 left in the second quarter. The Stars went up 49-46 with 7:49 left in the game on Johnson's bucket.
Wayland Baptist reeled off a 15-0 run to seize the lead. Castillo propelled Wayland Baptist with 11 points during that surge. Castillo ignited the run with three 3-pointers in a row.
