OCU hangs onto 87-85 win over Mid-America

Stars takes on Wayland Baptist for SAC Tournament title

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University advanced past Mid-America Christian 87-85 on Friday at the Sheaffer Center in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament semifinals.
Catherine Kruschke's free throws with 12 seconds left proved to be the difference for OCU (20-7). The Stars, ranked 17th in NAIA Division I, moved into the tournament championship game against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Oklahoma City advanced to the SAC Tournament title game for the 15th time in 17 years. The Stars will seek their 11th conference tournament crown. OCU posted its 18th consecutive 20-win season. Wayland Baptist, ranked 12th, ran its win streak to 20.
Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., piled up 25 points, six rebounds and three assists for her first 25-point outing since her career-high 28 points Nov. 17 against Langston. Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., posted her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds for OCU.
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Allison Frey, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., pitched in 11 points, five rebounds and two assists for the Stars.
"Cat was great," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "She really controlled the paint for us. We needed her because of Daniela's foul trouble."
Johnson sank a jumper in the paint to provide OCU a 74-57 advantage with 5:17 to go. Mid-America climbed back into the game as Kelli Tolar and Sarai Rodriguez canned back-to-back 3s to cut the Stars' lead to 82-77 with 47 seconds remaining. Lindsey Mann's free throws sliced Mid-America Christian's deficit to 84-81 at the 16-second mark.
Kruschke followed with three free throws to give OCU an 87-81 lead with 12 seconds left. Tolar and Rodriguez sank free throws to cut the Stars' edge to 87-85 with seven seconds showing.
OCU hung on as Alliyah Spatafora missed a potential game-winning 3 as time ran out. Mid-America hit the most 3-pointers by a Stars opponent this season with 17.
"We executed very well in the second and third quarters," Overton said. "Give MACU a lot of credit. They made a lot of 3s with us pretty close to them."
OCU created a 56-46 third-quarter cushion with a 9-0 run. Kruschke hit a trio of foul shots to spark the run. Johnson's free throw pushed the Stars' lead into double figures with 4:39 left. Janae Haag boosted OCU by nailing a trey as time expired on the third quarter.
