OCU trounces Southwestern Christian 6-3, 14-0

Stars record 28 hits in doubleheader

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University dispatched Southwestern Christian 6-3, 14-0 on Thursday at Southwestern Christian Field.
Leslie Miller's grand slam powered the Stars in the first-game win, and Laci Joyner's three-run home run highlighted a seven-run inning in the other game. OCU, ranked second in NAIA softball, improved to 36-1, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
In the third inning, Kyndra Holasek socked a single to left field to load the bases with one out. Miller launched a 1-2 offering past the right-center field fence to erase Southwestern Christian's 1-0 lead.
Miller nailed an RBI double in the seventh to make OCU's advantage 5-3.  Joyner swatted a run-scoring base hit to put the Stars up 6-3.
Miller, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., went 3-for-4 and scored a run with five RBIs, while Kali Pugh, a junior from Vista, Calif., was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base for OCU. Holasek, a senior from Mustang, Okla., picked up a double and two runs scored while going 2-for-4, and Joyner, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Abby Meador limited Southwestern Christian to one hit in 4.2 innings while collecting the victory. Meador, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., relieved Miller with one out in the third and two runners on. Meador (14-0) escaped the jam as OCU turned a double play.
In the second game, Joyner hammered a three-run shot beyond left-center field to give the Stars a 12-0 advantage with one out in the fourth. Pugh and Jaci Smith tacked on run-scoring base hits.
OCU plated five runs in the third. Smith nailed an RBI double, and Shelbi Legg added a two-run double.
Pugh posted a 3-for-4 performance with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, and Legg, a senior from Mustang, went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Stars. Smith, a freshman from Godley, Texas, was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two runs driven in.
Georgia Wall held Southwestern Christian to a hit and a walk in five innings. Wall, a freshman from Marlow, Okla., fanned nine, including striking out the side in the first and second innings. Wall moved to 11-0 this year.
OCU meets 22nd-ranked Houston-Victoria in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Farmers Branch, Texas.
