Stars split pair with St. Gregory's

OCU takes first loss after 29-0 start

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University nipped St. Gregory's 2-0 after dropping the first game 2-1 on Tuesday at the Ballfields at Firelake in a showdown of NAIA softball teams ranked in the top five.
OCU's Samantha Stallbaumer scored from third base on Laci Joyner's infield hit for the winning run of the second game. The second-ranked Stars went to 30-1, 5-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while fourth-ranked St. Gregory's moved to 17-3, 3-1 in the SAC.
Stallbaumer led off the fourth with an infield single to St. Gregory's pitcher Ashli Hafford. Stallbaumer stole second, then swiped third. With two out, Joyner hit the ball to St. Gregory's third baseman Maria Mercado Contreras, while Stallbaumer reached home plate.
With two away in the seventh, Leslie Miller had an infield single to the shortstop. Kyndra Holasek scored for the Stars from second base on the play.
Georgia Wall handed St. Gregory's its first shutout of the year. Wall, a freshman from Marlow, Okla., blanked St. Gregory's on four hits while striking out three. Wall (7-0) retired St. Gregory's first seven batters.
Wall stranded two St. Gregory's runners in the third and the fourth. Katie Godfrey got on via Holasek's error, and Sutv Meely bunted for a hit in the third. Wall retired Samantha Plott on a grounder to short.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hafford singled to right field, and Madison Faber reached on a hit by pitch for St. Gregory's. Wall struck out Contreras on a called third strike with Hafford on third and Bryanne Knox, running for Fabor, on second.
Holasek, a senior from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Joyner, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Stallbaumer, a freshman from Haven, Kan., had a 2-for-4 performance and scored a run.
In the first game, Sammy Leisinger put St. Gregory's up 1-0 with a first-inning run-scoring double. Contreras hit a home run in the second.
In the sixth, Holasek scored as Meely committed an error. Bryn Houlton limited OCU to four hits.
Miller took the loss, moving to 11-1. Miller struck out four and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in six innings. Miller, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., went 1-for-2.
OCU continues league play in a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Texas Wesleyan on Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
