OCU snares 53-46 win over Texas Wesleyan

Wallen supplies Stars her SAC-leading 12th double-double of 2015-16

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University took a 53-46 victory over Texas Wesleyan on Thursday at the Sid Richardson Center.
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, spearheaded OCU with 21 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals. The Stars, ranked 17th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, moved to 17-7, 14-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Wallen posted her league-leading 12th double-double of the season. Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., provided the Stars with 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.
Janae Haag contributed six points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Allison Frey knocked down two 3-pointers for six points for Oklahoma City. Leah Cheney handed out a team-best six assists for the Stars.
OCU took advantage of 19 Texas Wesleyan turnovers, swiping 10 steals. Oklahoma City limited Texas Wesleyan to 37.7 percent shooting from the field.
"Our defense was very good," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "Daniela had a solid game. I thought Markeisha Johnson attacked the basket very well and got us some baskets in transition. I'm really proud of the way Janae played."
The Stars seized the lead with a 10-0 first-quarter surge. Wallen and Frey nailed back-to-back treys to give OCU a 12-11 edge with 1:46 left in the first. Catherine Kruschke dropped in a lay-in, then Johnson scored on a transition bucket.
Oklahoma City pushed its lead into double digits with a 9-2 fourth-quarter run. Wallen fueled the Stars with seven points during that span. Wallen hit a fastbreak jumper to cap the flurry, which put OCU ahead 49-39 at the 4:07 mark.
OCU hosts St. Gregory's for a 3 p.m. contest Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena on senior night.
