Stars blister St. Gregory's 80-59

OCU runs its win streak to five entering postseason play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pounded St. Gregory's 80-59 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked 17th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, finished second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference to secure the second seed in the SAC Tournament on March 2-5 in Waxahachie, Texas. Two-time defending national champion OCU completed the regular season 18-7, 14-3 in league play.
Defending SAC Tournament champion OCU next plays Thursday in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals against the winner of a
Wednesday play-in game. Tournament pairings are to be announced by the conference.
Janae Haag and Daniela Wallen paced Oklahoma City with 15 points each. Haag, a junior from Olpe, Kan., hit all four of her shots from the field and 7 of 8 free throws while grabbing four rebounds and two steals. Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, added six rebounds and seven assists.
Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., produced 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., provided OCU with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists on 6-for-7 shooting from the floor on senior day. Mariana Duran, a junior from Yaracay, Venezuela, posted 11 points and four rebounds while hitting 5 of 6 from the field in her Stars debut.
OCU tied its season high with 22 assists while shooting 57.4 percent from the floor (31-for-54). In the first half, the Stars nailed 63 percent from the field (17-for-27). The Stars piled up 50 points in the paint.
The Stars seized the lead with a 13-0 first-quarter run. Kruschke ignited OCU with a layup and a pair of free throws. Haag put the Stars ahead 15-6 with a set of free shots with 4:58 left in the quarter.
In the second quarter, OCU reeled off an 8-0 run to move ahead 41-19. Duran sank two layups to bookend the surge.
Oklahoma City grew its advantage to 25 points on three occasions. The first time, Haag downed free throws to put the Stars up 73-48 with 4:29 left in the game.
The Stars finished the season 9-1 at Abe Lemons Arena.
