OCU pounds Bacone 72-55

Stars sweep regular-season series against Bacone

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University finished its regular-season series against Bacone with a 72-55 win on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Allison Frey, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., shot 5-of-13 from the 3-point territory with two layups and a free throw for a team-high 20 points. The Stars, ranked 18th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, moved to 12-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference and 15-7 overall.
"Playing a good team that has a few players that are tough to guard, it was important for us to get a good start on defense, and I thought we did," said OCU coach Bo Overton. "This team played zone probably 90 percent of the game tonight so having Frey on the floor really helps us. I think her teammates did a great job giving her the ball and she shot with a lot of confidence tonight."
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, notched her 10th double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while adding five assists and two steals.
Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Oklahoma City led 36-30 at the half and came out on a 6-2 run to stretch its lead to 42-32 midway the third quarter.
Bacone started the fourth quarter off with a 3-pointer but Frey answered with a 3, followed by a Johnson layup and another trey by Frey to put the Stars up 15 points at 57-42 with 6:41 left.
After a Lady Warrior free throw, the Stars went on a 10-3 clip to take their biggest lead of the game at 67-46 with 3:32 remaining. The sequence included a 3-point play via a layup and a foul shot by Frey, a Leah Cheney fastbreak layup off a Wallen steal, a Lady Warriors jumper, a Wallen trey, a Bacone free throw and a jumper by Frey.
OCU outrebounded Bacone 39-29 and scored 28 points in the paint to the Lady Warriors' 18 points in the box.
The Stars held the Lady Warriors to 36 percent from the field in the second half, while Bacone shot 46 percent in the first half. OCU made 47 percent of its shots from the field in the first half and 42 percent in the second half.
OCU faces USAO at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
