Stars outlast Southwestern Christian 74-64

OCU starts homestand off with a win over Lady Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University cruised past Southwestern Christian 74-64 on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Three Stars scored in double-digits led by Daniela Wallen's 24-point effort. Oklahoma City, ranked 18th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 14-7 overall and 11-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
"Southwestern Christian has been playing good and winning some games," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "They shoot the ball really well, like a lot of teams in our league. We had to play some zone early to keep from not fouling. Once we got to halftime, I felt like we could mix that up a little bit. I thought it really helped, it kept them off the 3-point line. The girls did a great job of playing defense. We got it going against their zone by making some shots. I'm really proud of them, good win. "
Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while adding three steals and two assists.
Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., tallied 16 points and eight rebounds, while Leah Cheney, a junior from Ault, Colo., chipped in a season-high 15 points with four assists.
The game was notched up at 34-34 at the half. The lead changed five times in the third quarter and was tied three times. Janae Haag, a junior from Olpe, Kan., hit a pair of free throws to tie the game for the last time at 44-44 with 4:03 to play in the third quarter. The Stars finished the quarter on a 7-2 run to go up 51-46.
Oklahoma City started the fourth quarter on a 9-4 run in the first three minutes to stretch its lead to 60-50.
Cheney drained a 3-pointer at the 4:54 mark in the fourth quarter to give the Stars their biggest lead at 65-50. The Lady Eagles chipped at the lead but Wallen and Kruschke made free throws to put OCU back up by 15 points at 70-55 with under a minute to play.
Oklahoma City shot 19 of 23 from the free-throw line, while Southwestern Christian made 6-for-9 free throws.
The Stars were 50 percent from the 3-point territory, while the Lady Eagles shot 27.6 from 3-point land. OCU outrebounded SCU 36-26.
Oklahoma City plays Bacone at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
