OCU knock off Concordia 4-2

Stars trounce Saint Mary, Tabor

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University opened the season with a 4-2 win over Concordia (Neb.) on Friday at Gateway Park in the Cowtown Classic.
OCU, ranked sixth in NAIA softball, added a 10-0 blanking of Tabor (Kan.) and a 12-2 romp past Saint Mary (Kan.).
Against Concordia, Laci Joyner drove in the first two runs on a first-inning ground ball and a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Bailey Whitmore nailed a two-run single to center field in the sixth.
Whitmore, a freshman from Oklahoma City, went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in her OCU debut. Stephanie Koishor, a junior from Valley Center, Calif., was 1-for-2 and scored a run for the Stars.
Georgia Wall picked up the win. Wall, a freshman from Marlow, Okla., had five strikeouts in five innings while allowing one hit. Leslie Miller fanned four in the last two innings and recorded a save.
Against Tabor, Miller shut out Tabor on one hit and four walks in five innings. Miller, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., notched the win and six strikeouts.
OCU built a 5-0 first-inning advantage. Kali Pugh smoked an RBI single, and Joyner pounded a two-run triple. Whitmore tacked on a run-scoring base hit.
Joyner, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Samantha Stallbaumer, a freshman from Haven, Kan., was 2-for-2 with a stolen base and three runs scored for Oklahoma City.
In the Saint Mary contest, Kyndra Holasek smacked a two-run double to put OCU up 7-1 in the third. Stallbaumer added a sacrifice fly, and Miller had the first of two RBI doubles.
Miller added a run-scoring single for a 3-for-5, three-RBI performance. Stallbaumer went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two thefts, and Kayley Humann was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Madison Ellis and Jaci Smith each contributed a pair of hits.
Abby Meador, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., fanned 12 while allowing three hits in seven innings.
The Stars continue play in the Cowtown Classic at 9 a.m. Saturday against fourth-ranked Central Methodist (Mo.).
