Wayland Baptist hands OCU 72-60 loss

Stars go to 3-6 against ranked foes in 2015-16

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist (Texas) dealt Oklahoma City University a 72-60 setback Thursday at the Hutcherson Center in a showdown of top 25-ranked NAIA women's basketball squads.
Daniela Wallen turned in 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals for OCU. The 18th-ranked Stars went to 13-7, 10-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, posted her league-high ninth double-double of the season. Allison Frey, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., tallied 12 points and four 3-pointers, and Leah Cheney, a junior from Ault, Colo., produced 11 points and four steals for OCU.
Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., scored 10 points to give the Stars four double-digit scorers.
Frey canned a 3 to put the Stars ahead 43-38 with 6:24 remaining in the third quarter. Wayland Baptist responded with an 8-0 run. Krystal Forthan downed back-to-back buckets for a 46-43 edge with 2:36 to go in the period.
Nina Sato's jumper with eight minutes left capped a 9-0 Wayland surge to push the Flying Queens' lead to 60-50. OCU and Wayland Baptist traded the lead seven times in the contest.
Wayland Baptist, ranked 14th, ran its win streak to 13 and record to 17-4, 12-1 in the SAC.
The Stars square off with Southwestern Christian at 6 p.m. Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
