OCU stomps Bacone 38-12

Stars pile up five pins

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University blasted Bacone 38-12 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Michael Sanchez, James Landoll, Kristian Holguin-Mendez, Ricky McCarty and Derek Sivertsen provided the Stars with falls. Oklahoma City, ranked sixth in NAIA wrestling, improved to 6-2 in duals this season.
Sivertsen, a senior from Moore, Okla., recorded OCU's fastest fall of the dual. Sivertsen stuck the pin on Felipe Nava at the 1:46 mark of the match. OCU took a 38-6 advantage after Sivertsen's victory in the 184-pound bout. Sivertsen stands fifth in the national rankings.
McCarty and Michael McDonald wrestled their first matches of the season. McCarty, a senior from Lawton, Okla., wrapped up a fall of Dylan Hill in 4:46 at 174 pounds. McCarty holds the fourth spot in the 174-pound NAIA ratings.
McDonald, a freshman from Spring Hill, Fla., rolled up four four-point near falls and a reversal in a 21-2 technical-fall victory over Reid Pfeifer in the 125-pound contest.
"We are extremely glad to have them back in the lineup," OCU coach C.J. Campbell said of McCarty and McDonald. "It really solidifies our dual team lineup.
"The team came out with good aggression and intensity. We won a couple of matches that may be considered upsets to Bacone. We dropped a couple of matches that we considered upsets. Our performance was not completely up to par, but it's how we finish. This is a stepping stone. We're on the way to greatness."
Sanchez, a freshman from El Paso, Texas, followed McDonald's win by pinning Kaiden Hudson in 3:56 at 133. Landoll, a senior from Marysville, Kan., put OCU ahead 17-0 in the dual by prevailing over Abel Villa Moreno in 2:58 in the 141-pound match.
Mendez completed the fall of Courtney Shaver in 4:51. Mendez, a junior from Sapulpa, Okla., sits ninth in the 157-pound NAIA rankings.
The Stars' Brok Williams edged Joseph McAleavy 3-1 in the 165-pound contest. Williams, a junior from Lawton, Okla., scored a first-period takedown and riding time to upend McAleavy, the 15th-ranked 165-pounder in the NAIA.
OCU competes in the Newman Jet Invitational at 9 a.m. Sunday in Wichita, Kan.
