Stars use 40-0 run to pull away

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University women's basketball team, propelled by a huge run in the second and third quarters, blew by Haskell (Kan.) on 89-49 Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City, ranked ninth in NAIA Division I, used a 40-0 run over the course of 18 minutes to move to 9-1 on the season.

Daniela Wallen, a senior from Caracas, Venezuela, led the Stars with 25 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals in just 22 minutes of action. By halftime, Wallen had already recorded a double-double for the sixth time this season.
"We got a little jumpy there early," OCU head coach Bo Overton said. "But we finally got in a rhythm and settled down. We did a better job defensively and on the boards."
Daniela Galindo and Brooke Irwin both scored in double figures for the Stars. Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., scored 20 points and dished out three assists. Irwin, a junior from Mustang, Okla., scored 10 points, grabbed two rebounds and blocked two shots.
OCU led by as many as 49 and shot 50.8 percent from the field while holding Haskell to just 29.0 percent. The Stars also held a 45-33 advantage in rebounds, a 10-1 advantage in blocked shots and a 17-2 advantage in fast break points.
Mariana Duran, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, provided OCU with nine assists, four rebounds and two steals in the game.
"Mariana Duran is making great decisions with the ball," Overton said. "She is a huge part of this team with the way she can see people and dish it out. She can also defend people and rebound for us."

Cerissa Honena-Reyes led the Indians (7-6) with 23 points while also providing three rebounds and two assists.
Oklahoma City heads to Lawrence, Kan., for a rematch with Haskell at 6 p.m. Saturday at Tony Coffin Sports Complex.
