Stars take 107-99 win over Wayland Baptist

OCU remains undefeated at 8-0

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University derailed Wayland Baptist 107-99 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Terence Bonhomme and Xavier Smith posted 27 points each for the Stars. OCU, ranked 18th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, moved to 8-0, 2-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Bonhomme, a junior from St. Martinville, La., sank 10 of 12 free-throw attempts. Smith, a senior from Richardson, Texas, provided the Stars with his fifth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds and two blocks while hitting 10 of his 15 field-goal attempts.
Lou Dunbar, a junior from Seabrook, Texas, picked up 14 points and six rebounds, while Walter Rickett, a junior from Dallas, contributed 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor for the Stars. Tyler Alderman, a senior from Fishers, Ind., added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Stars reached 100 points for the second time in three games and 90 points for the sixth time this year. OCU shot 55.4 percent in the game and 60 percent in the second half from the field. Wayland Baptist had won seven of its previous eight games.
"I was really excited about this game, and I know my kids were, so I'm really proud of how they played this game," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "Now I'm not proud of how we finished, but that's us still learning. What I keep telling them is we play well for 24 to 28 minutes right now. As the season progresses, we want to get to a complete 40 minutes. We're getting closer and closer every game. We continue to get leads, and then down the stretch for whatever reason they're gone. We're getting better. I was excited about this win. Any time you can go to 2-0 in league play, it's exciting for a basketball team."
Alderman boosted OCU's advantage to 62-39 with a bucket to cap a 9-0 run with 16:16 left.
Joshua Throns and Ruben Lopez sank treys for Wayland Baptist in the final minute. Wayland Baptist trimmed its deficit to 105-99 with seven seconds to go on Louis Timms' putback. Bonhomme answered with free throws to keep Wayland Baptist at bay.
Oklahoma City meets Randall at 8 p.m. Friday in the Randall Classic in Moore, Okla.
