Stars stifle Philander Smith 74-52

OCU limits Philander Smith to lowest field-goal percentage by opponent

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Oklahoma City University took a 74-52 victory over Philander Smith (Ark.) on Wednesday at Mims Gymnasium.
Xavier Smith, a senior from Richardson, Texas, topped Oklahoma City with 22 points. The Stars, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I men's basketball, moved to 11-1.
Smith supplied OCU with 10 rebounds, two blocks, two steals and his team-best sixth double-double of the season. Terence Bonhomme, a junior from St. Martinville, La., racked up 11 points, four rebounds and two steals for the Stars.
OCU's Brandon Patten, a junior from Orange Park, Fla., posted 10 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Syrus McDonald, a senior from Flint, Mich., contributed nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Philander Smith managed 30.6 percent shooting from the field for a season low by an OCU opponent this season. The Stars held Philander Smith to a 25.9 percent field-goal percentage in the second half.
"I thought our team played extremely hard tonight," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "Our defense is improving each game, and that's what kept us in it during the first half. Our post players did a great job of rising to the challenge on Philander's interior players. I'm very proud of this team for what they have done this semester on and off the court. We still have a lot of improving to do on both ends, but hopefully we will be playing our best basketball over the course of the next few months."
The Stars broke away from a 29-29 halftime tie using 65.2 percent shooting from the floor in the second half. Patten sank a trey, then Smith threw down a dunk off Patten's long outlet pass to give OCU a 38-33 lead with 15:31 to go. McDonald's 3-point play made OCU's run 10-1 and pushed the Stars' advantage to 43-34 with 13:56 remaining.
OCU put together an 18-0 surge to increase its lead to 68-45 with 2:50 left. Tyler Alderman led the Stars with six points during the run, sinking lay-ins to cap the spree.
The Stars face West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. Dec. 31 in an exhibition in Canyon, Texas.
