Stars bow out of NAIA Championships

OCU completes breakthrough season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Oklahoma City University's season came to a halt after a 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 loss to Eastern Oregon in the NAIA volleyball championships Friday at the Tyson Events Center.
The 12th-ranked Stars finished their finest season yet 32-5. OCU fielded a team of underclassmen who could all return next year.
Oklahoma City notched its first victories in the NAIA Championships ever. The Stars racked up a slew of program milestones this season: their highest ranking ever at No. 12, first Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title, second SAC Tournament championship, first 30-win season since 2008, the league's 11th undefeated conference record and first 18-0 SAC record.
Shekinah Clarke, a sophomore from Waianae, Hawaii, supplied OCU with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, accumulated 36 assists, five digs and three blocks.
The Stars' Manon Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, turned in nine kills and five blocks. Marijana Bjelobrk, Fia Faa'agi and Holly Randall each had seven kills. Caitlin Chamness, a junior from Littleton, Colo., served up six aces.
Chamness produced three aces in a row and four aces in five points to boost OCU to an early 8-5 lead in the first set.
In the third set, Soraru nailed a kill to give the Stars a 21-16 lead. Sixth-ranked Eastern Oregon responded with a 7-0 run to seize the lead.
