OCU edges Campbellsville 19-14

Sixth-ranked Stars move to 3-1 against ranked opponents in 2016-17

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University knocked off Campbellsville (Ky.) 19-14 on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Champion Hotels Oklahoma City Duals.
The Stars took a 24-13 victory over Concordia (Neb.), a 54-3 romp past York (Neb.) and a 28-10 win over Hastings (Neb.). OCU, ranked sixth in NAIA wrestling, improved to 10-2.
Korey Walker clinched the Stars' two wins over ranked opponents – eighth-ranked Campbellsville and 13th-ranked Concordia. Oklahoma City went to 3-1 against top-25 competition this season.
"It was a great day for us," OCU coach C.J. Campbell said. "We came away with two crucial dual team wins over ranked opponents. There were several crucial matchups against Campbellsville. That was a good win for us. Riley Fielder got an important win for us late in the dual for us to come away with the win. It's time to heal up over the holiday, then go win National Duals."
Walker, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., owns the No. 3 ranking among NAIA 285-pounders. Walker (21-4) went 4-0 on the day with three falls and two wins over ranked foes. Walker tallied an 8-4 win over Terrell Moore to put away OCU's win over Campbellsville. Moore holds the No. 16 spot in the rankings. Walker notched a first-period four-point near fall.
Riley Fielder put OCU on top 16-14 with a 7-5 sudden-victory win over Jacob Franklin at 197 pounds. Fielder, a sophomore from Tuttle, Okla., posted takedowns in the third period and the extra period to set up Walker.
Ricky McCarty got the best of a matchup of ranked 174-pounders. McCarty, ranked fourth, topped sixth-ranked Justin Brown 7-3. McCarty, a senior from Lawton, Okla., moved to 4-0 on the season. OCU's Mason Naifeh upended third-ranked Adrian Camposano 10-8 in the 125-pound bout. Naifeh, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla., is rated 12th in the NAIA.
Against Concordia, Walker held a 3-2 advantage in the third period using a first-period takedown. Walker caught fourth-ranked Ceron Francisco late in the match and finished the pin with three seconds remaining to punctuate the OCU victory.
Ken Burkhardt Jr., cut Concordia's deficit to 18-13 in the dual. Burkhardt won 17-6 over Fielder in the 197-pound bout.
Gavin Millhouse prevailed over Foster Bunce, the 13th-ranked 149-pounder in the NAIA. Millhouse, a freshman from Del City, Okla., took the 6-0 win behind a third-period four-point near fall. Kristian Holguin-Mendez followed with a 10-4 win, overcoming a 3-1 second-period deficit with a third-period four-point near fall. Brok Williams tied the dual score 9-9 with a 7-5 win over Kirk Kaliszewski in the 165-pound match.
At 174, McCarty put OCU ahead in the dual with a 16-0 technical-fall victory. McCarty posted two four-point near falls in the first period. At 184, Derek Sivertsen picked up a 12-1 win using a first-period four-point near fall.
Against York, the Stars reached 50 points for the fifth time ever. Kaden Truelove and Walker completed the dual with falls at 197 and 285.
Against Hastings, OCU rolled up four consecutive victories. Mendez touched off the Stars' surge by pinning Brian Messersmith in 2:55 at the 157-pound match. Tanner Borror gave OCU a 22-6 lead after winning 8-2 in the 184-pound contest. Walker pinned Daniel Gonzalez in 3:41.
The Stars wrestle next in the Midland Viking-Warrior Classic at 9 a.m. Dec. 31 in Fremont, Neb.
