OCU eliminates John Brown from SAC Tournament

12th-ranked Stars advance to tournament championship match for second consecutive year

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University held off John Brown (Ark.) 25-12, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21 on Friday evening in the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament semifinals at the Hutcherson Center.
Manon Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, fueled the Stars (29-3) with 20 kills and four blocks. Oklahoma City, ranked 12th in the NAIA, reached the SAC Tournament championship match for the second consecutive year 11 a.m. Saturday against Wayland Baptist (Texas).
Soraru posted her third 20-kill performance of the year. Mariana Bjelobrk, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, provided the Stars with 14 kills and eight digs, and Shekinah Clarke, a sophomore from Waianae, Hawaii, produced 12 kills, eight digs, four blocks and two aces.
Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, amassed 49 assists, 12 digs, five kills and two blocks, while Dani Chase, a junior from Yukon, Okla., totaled 19 digs for OCU. Caitlin Chamness, a junior from Littleton, Colo., rang up four aces.
"We came out hitting on all cylinders in set one and simply stopped playing hard," OCU coach Kyle Steele said. "JBU did some things in their blocking scheme to make us adjust, but it was really our effort and intensity that dictated the match. It was a win in the end, but not in the fashion we would have liked. We play again tomorrow and look forward to correcting some mistakes."
In the first set, the Stars unleashed a 7-0 run to build a 24-9 advantage and get to set point. Clarke notched two kills and teamed with Soraru on a block, while Chamness had two aces to spark OCU's surge.
In the third set, Bjelobrk's kill put OCU up 24-21. John Brown's Bailei Brown and Kennedy Shelstead socked kills to cut the Stars' lead to 24-23. Soraru hammered a kill to put away the set.
In the fourth, OCU erased 13-9 and 17-15 deficits. The Stars reeled off a 6-0 splurge to go ahead 21-17. Bjelobrk smacked a pair of kills, and Stefani Nell added an ace to ignite the OCU rally. Soraru and Bjelobrk nailed kills to clinch the OCU victory.
