Stars stay alive in NWCA National Duals

OCU posts two wins over top-25 competition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oklahoma City University moved into the consolation semifinals of the NWCA National Duals with a 29-12 win over Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA wrestling, racked up wins over 18th-ranked Cumberland and 16th-ranked Midland (Neb.) 37-13 on Friday. Second-ranked Indiana Tech knocked OCU (11-3) into the consolations 24-18.
Oklahoma City meets 14th-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in the consolation semifinals 8 a.m. CST Saturday. The winner of that dual makes the fifth-place contest at noon Saturday.
Against Cumberland, Eric Ambriz and Ricky McCarty put OCU on top 16-6 in the dual. Ambriz, a junior from Lake Elsinore, Calif., edged Ricky Ratcliff in sudden victory 7-5 in the 157-pound bout. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., followed by pinning Orlando Nawade in a minute.
After Cumberland's Kyle Delaune won by fall in the 174-pound match, the Stars closed the dual with three victories. Derek Sivertsen of the Stars nipped Dustin Harris 3-2, while Cody Sivertsen prevailed 13-1 over Tony Crowell. Korey Walker punctuated the win with a fall in 5:16 over Tyler Smith.
Against Midland, Alvie Killingsworth, Brok Williams and Derek Sivertsen powered Oklahoma City with falls. McCarty, ranked No. 2 among NAIA 165-pounders, knocked off Cooper Self 16-2 for a 24-6 Stars lead.
Ambriz added a 12-3 win over Tyler Willis at 157, and Cody Sivertsen pounded Adam Ball 23-8.
Against Indiana Tech, James Landoll put the Stars up 6-4 in the dual with a 10-4 win in the 141-pound match. Indiana Tech retaliated with Justin Atkinson's fall and Chase Hack's 15-2 win.
McCarty broke the string by beating John Weldon 9-4. Tech built a 24-9 advantage after the 184-pound match. Cody Sivertsen had a fall in 4:35, and Walker won 4-1 at heavyweight for OCU.
