Stars defeat USAO 62-48

OCU maintains its perfect conference record

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University beat USAO 62-48 on Saturday at USAO Fieldhouse.
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, carried the Stars with a 23-point effort, while adding seven steals, three assists and three rebounds. OCU, ranked tied for 12th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 11-4 overall and 8-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The Stars led 23-20 at halftime after both teams shot under 30 percent from the field during the first half.
In the second half, the Stars shot 44.4 percent from the field, while the Lady Drovers were held to 33.3 percent shooting.
The third quarter proved to be the deciding point as the Stars outscored the Lady Drovers 23-14. Twelve of Wallen's 23 points came in the third quarter.
Kiah Cummings of USAO scored a basket with 6:31 left in the fourth quarter to cut the Stars lead to seven points at 51-44. This was the closest the Lady Drovers would get. 
OCU's Allison Frey, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., hit four consecutive free throws followed by a Markeisha Johnson bucket and another Frey free throw. The Stars' lead ballooned to 14 points with 2:05 left to play in the game.
Frey finished with 11 points, as she was 5 of 6 from the free-throw line and 2-for-7 from behind the arc. Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., led OCU in rebounds with eight, while adding six points and two steals.
The Stars collected 13 steals as they forced 18 USAO turnovers and only committed nine turnovers.
Oklahoma City were 18-of-23 from the free-throw line, while the Lady Drovers shot just 7-for-9 from the charity line.
The Stars face off against Wayland Baptist (Texas) in a matchup of the top two teams in the conference 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
