Stars stave off Cavaliers rally to win 68-64

OCU remains undefeated in conference play

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University withstood a second-half comeback by St. Gregory's to win 68-64 on Thursday at the Don Sumner Field House.
Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., notched her fifth double-double on the season by grabbing a season-high 16 rebounds and scoring 15 points. The Stars, ranked tied for 12th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, moved to 10-4 overall and remain undefeated in Sooner Athletic Conference play at 7-0.
The Stars led by as many as 18 points at the 6:59 mark of the third quarter before the Cavaliers closed out the quarter on an 18-4 run to cut OCU's lead to 51-47.
SGU captured their first lead of the game at the 4:38 mark of the fourth quarter after consecutive 3-pointers by Courtney Leach and a second chance bucket by Aliyah Richard.
OCU's Daniela Wallen and Catherine Kruschke made back-to-back baskets to regain the lead, but a Cavaliers basket brought the game within one point at 59-58 with 2:42 to play.
The Stars' Allison Frey, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., sank a trey to go up four points at 62-58.
On SGU's possession, Kruschke drew an offensive foul and scored a bucket at the other end to extend the OCU lead by six points with 1:41 to play.
Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., made 4 of 6 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The Stars shot 40 percent from the field, while holding the Cavaliers to 36.5 percent. OCU owned the rebounding battle 47-37.
Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, led the Stars in scoring with 16 points and added eight rebounds.
OCU's Johnson finished with 12 points and tallied a team-high seven assists, while Frey had six points, two assists and a steal.
OCU shot 12 of 16 from the free-throw line, while SGU were 8-for-12 from the charity line.
The Stars play at 3 p.m. Saturday against USAO in Chickasha, Okla.
