Stars survive 57-54 against SAGU

OCU remains undefeated in SAC play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University held on to defeat Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 57-54 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., hit a pair of free throws late in regulation to give the Stars a three-point lead that remained intact as time expired. OCU, ranked tied for 13th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 9-4 overall and stand atop the Sooner Athletic Conference at 6-0.
"It's just one of those games where we figured out how to win late in the game when we needed to," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "Daniela made some key shots. Cat made a couple plays. And again Leah Cheney made plays when we needed it. Again, really proud of them. It didn't look great but they tell me you just got to win by one."
Leah Cheney, a junior from Ault, Colo., and Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, shared the team high in points with 12. Cheney added three rebounds, two assists, a block and three steals, while Wallen collected seven rebounds and two steals.
With 5:03 left to play in the fourth quarter, OCU's Amanda Ingram stole the ball and assisted Cheney on a fastbreak layup to put the Stars up 51-47. After a made free throw by the Lions, Wallen extended the Stars' lead to five points with a layup at the 2:22 mark.
SAGU's Alexis McAfee turned a 3-point play on a layup and foul by making the free throw to put the Lions down by one point at 53-52 with 1:01 to play. Janae Haag of the Stars drew a foul and converted her two free throws to put the Stars up by three points. The Lions' Bethany Krock scored a layup with 32 seconds remaining to move within one point again but that was the closest SAGU would get. Johnson's free throws moments later proved to be enough for the Stars.
OCU's Johnson finished with four points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Ingram, a junior from Oklahoma City, tallied five points, four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, while Haag, a junior from Olpe, Kan., notched eight points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Oklahoma City shot 41.7 percent from the field and held the Lions to 38.5 percent shooting.
The Stars converted 20 points off of 21 Lion turnovers, while SAGU scored 17 points from OCU's 23 turnovers.
The Stars are back in action against St. Gregory's at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 in Shawnee, Okla.
