Undefeated OCU tops ranked OLLU

Stars earn head coach Brian Harvey his career win No. 725

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University women's soccer team beat Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 2-1 in the second overtime period Sunday at Stars Field.
In the 109th minute, Allison Worsham, a senior from Edmond, Okla., netted the golden goal from an assist by fellow senior Ailee Thompson of Oklahoma City. The goal was Worsham's third of the season, and Thompson's second assist of the season. The Stars improved to 2-0, and Our Lady of the Lake, ranked 24th in the NAIA, fell to 0-2-1.
The win marked career victory No. 725 for coach Brian Harvey. Harvey holds the reigns as the only head coach the OCU soccer program has ever had since the men's program began in 1986 and the women started in 1994, boasting of a 725-277-60 record. Harvey has a record of 392-181-36 coaching the OCU men and a 333-96-22 record guiding the women.
"It's the selection of the players," Harvey said. "The players are the ones that we gauge in formations. And coaches, we try to work as hard as we can during the week to create as many situations that can occur in a game on a Saturday. So it's been a great ride."
Vanessa Mendoza, a junior from Garland, Texas, got the Stars off to a quick start by scoring just 95 seconds into the first half.
Brandy Salazar of OLLU scored the tying goal to force overtime in the second half in the 73rd minute.
Stars goalkeeper Kirsten Thomas, a freshman from Keller, Texas, collected three saves and the win in her college debut.
Gabriela Lopez of OLLU logged 67:53 in the net, recording six saves and allowing one goal. Madison Raines occupied the net for the last 52:07 of the match, collecting one save and allowing the game-winning goal. Raines received the loss to put her at 0-1 on the season.
OCU plays next at 3 p.m. Sept. 10 against Kansas Wesleyan at the John Brown Invitational in Siloam Springs, Ark.
