Stars advance past Texas Wesleyan 5-3

OCU plates three runs in eighth to break tie

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University slipped past Texas Wesleyan 5-3 on Friday night at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
Dylan Delso knocked in the go-ahead run, and Jared Baker brought home the eventual winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Stars (39-10). OCU, ranked second in the NAIA, meets Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Delso, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., nailed an RBI single past the infield with none out in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie. Baker, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., followed with his own run-scoring base hit through the left part of the infield to put OCU on top 4-2.
With one out, Adam Clark laid down a squeeze bunt in front of pitcher Connor Zamora. Joe Haddox steamed into home plate ahead of Zamora's throw to give the Stars a 5-3 lead.
Connor Lynch swatted a base hit to left field to provide Oklahoma City a 1-0 first-inning lead and score Reggie Wilson from second base. In the fifth, Wilson hit a single into left that brought in Clark for a 2-1 OCU edge.
In the ninth, Holden Lyons worked past a two-on, nobody-out jam to clinch OCU's win. With runners on second and third, Lyons retired Tyler Kamtz and Jake Davis on popouts. Dusteyn Suttle cut Texas Wesleyan's deficit to 5-3 with an RBI single. Lyons followed by striking out Jonathan Bravo as Delso threw Bravo out at first after a dropped third strike to end the game.
Lyons, a sophomore right-hander from Edmond, Okla., posted his fifth save. Miguel Gonzalez, a junior righty from Los Angeles, picked up the victory to move to 6-0 on the year. Carlos Chavez, a junior right-hander from Rio Rancho, N.M., kept Texas Wesleyan to one run through 7.1 innings by working around seven hits and six walks. Chavez struck out five. The Stars combined to strand 13 Texas Wesleyan runners.
Lytle, a freshman from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Wilson, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, went 2-for-4 with a run scored, stolen base and an RBI. Baker was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
