OCU splits doubleheader with USAO

Stars suffer their first SAC loss of year

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University dropped its first Sooner Athletic Conference game of 2015 to USAO 3-0 Saturday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA softball, got shut out for the first time this season. OCU bounced back to win the second game 11-3 to go to 44-2, 21-1 in the SAC.
Oklahoma City was last scoreless in a game against William Carey (Miss.) on May 28, 2014 in the NAIA Softball World Series.
OCU's Jocelin Diaz, a senior from Maracay, Venezuela, went 3-for-3 in the first game.
Maria Gomez, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, picked up her first loss of the season and went to 17-1. Gomez went the distance, allowed six hits, three runs and struck out one.
The Stars scored their first run of the day in the second inning of the second game. Emily Krienke, a senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, had a sacrifice bunt to third and drove in Laci Joyner in the process.
OCU racked up four runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Madison Ellis, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., bombed a home run to left field that started the scoring in the inning.
Later in the inning, Kylee Rounsaville, a senior from Mustang, Okla., singled to right-center to score Kyndra Holasek. Jamie Rateliff, a senior from Mustang, Okla., then doubled to left center and drove in Kayley Humann and Diaz.
The Stars smoked two homers in the sixth inning to score four more runs. McRae Cayton, a junior from Irvine, Calif., had a solo blast to center field, then Holasek homered to right-center and brought in Carissa Turang and Ellis as well to give OCU a 9-1 lead.
USAO added two runs in the sixth, while the Stars scored two insurance of its own in the seventh.
Abby Meador, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., pitched the full seven innings, allowed eight hits, three runs and struck out eight.
The Stars travel to Mid-America Christian for a doubleheader starting 2 p.m. Tuesday in Oklahoma City.
