Stars take SAC Tournament crown 76-70 over OBU

OCU notches 10th league tournament title, 21st national-tournament berth

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University collected the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament championship 76-70 over Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma City (25-2) took its 10th SAC Tournament championship. OCU, ranked second in NAIA Division I, posted its 17th consecutive 25-win season. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist went to 25-5.
Rateska Brown, a senior from Alvin, S.C., fueled the Stars with 19 points – 17 in the second half – and snagged the tournament most valuable player award. Brown provided OCU with 16.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.33 steals a game during the tournament.
"I thought defensively we executed our game plan," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. "It was a team effort on both ends of the floor. We were really proud of our composure when OBU went on their run in the second half. We had a team of big players making big plays."
Oklahoma City swept the SAC regular-season and tournament titles for the eighth time. Defending national champion OCU clinched its 18th consecutive and 21st national-tournament appearance when the Stars won their sixth regular-season conference championship in a row Feb. 26.
The NAIA Division I Tournament qualifiers will be announced 3 p.m. CST Wednesday. The national-tournament pairings will be revealed in a live video announcement 7 p.m. Central time Wednesday via NAIAnetwork.com. OCU fans can watch the presentation alongside the team inside the Leichter Room above Abe Lemons Arena on Wednesday night. The NAIA Tournament runs March 18-24 in Independence, Mo.
Oklahoma City captured its seventh national championship last year. OCU won national titles in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012 and 2014.
Janay Borum, a senior from Upper Marlboro, Md., powered OCU with a game-high 20 points, seven assists and seven steals while shooting 10-for-12 from the free-throw line to reel in the tournament hustle award. Comprising the all-tournament team were Oklahoma City's Ouleymatou Coulibaly, Yvonte Neal and Marisha Wallace plus Oklahoma Baptist's McKenzie Cooper and Charity Fowler.
Wallace, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., had her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds in 18 minutes of court time, while Coulibaly, a senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, added her 11th double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Stars. Neal, a senior from Spring Valley, Calif., contributed 10 points and four rebounds.
Oklahoma Baptist, who had won the 2014 SAC Tournament title, cut OCU's lead down to one point on four occasions in the second half. Fowler's lay-in sliced the Stars' lead to 50-49 with 11:13 to go.
The Stars stayed in front thanks to a Cara Neighbors putback and Brown's jumper. Borum hit free throws to give OCU a 56-50 edge at the 8:45 mark.
Coulibaly's jumper put OCU on top 69-59 with 4:03 remaining. Oklahoma Baptist got no closer than six points the remainder of the game.
