Stars rally past John Brown 72-59

OCU plays Southwestern Christian in 3 p.m. semifinal Friday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University ousted John Brown (Ark.) from the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament quarterfinals 72-59 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, powered the Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I, with 17 points, 15 rebounds and two steals. Oklahoma City (23-2) advanced to face Southwestern Christian (15-16) in the semifinals 3 p.m. Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Rateska Brown, a senior from Alvin, S.C., provided OCU with 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals, and Marisha Wallace, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., added 13 points and five rebounds. The Stars' Yvonte Neal, a senior from Spring Valley, Calif., picked up 12 points and six steals, and Janay Borum, a senior from Upper Marlsboro, Md., sparked OCU with nine points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
"I thought we showed toughness in the stretch," Oklahoma City Latricia Trammell said. "Ouleymatou Coulibaly really played well and brought a spark to our team."
John Brown erased a 13-point OCU first-half lead. In the second period, John Brown embarked on a 10-0 run to take a 52-51 edge with 7:50 remaining.
Oklahoma City responded with a 9-0 surge to build a 62-54 advantage with 3:30 left. Eliana Fernandez gave John Brown a 54-53 lead, but Borum answered with a jumper. Wallace had a free throw to cap OCU's run.
The Stars owned the rebounding battle 46-25 and second-chance points 25-3.
"We need to be more assertive on the offensive end and play through the different surges of the game," Trammell said. "We locked down on defense for the most part and considering this was the seventh time we have played JBU in the past two seasons, there is a competitive spirit between both teams, and it's always a hard fought battle."
