OBU edges Stars 5-4

OCU builds 4-2 lead in eighth inning

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University took a 5-4 loss to top-ranked Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday at Bison Field at Ford Park.
Yariel Gonzalez rallied Oklahoma Baptist with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning. OBU stayed unbeaten at 30-0, 9-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Oklahoma City, ranked 11th in NAIA baseball, went to 25-7, 8-2 in the SAC.
Jared Baker gave the Stars a 3-2 lead by nailing a single to right field to score Joe Lytle from second base with two out in the seventh. Josh Halbert padded the OCU lead to 4-2 by knocking in J.J. Bissell from second with a two-out base hit to center field in the eighth.
OCU's Ryan Wright drove in the first run of the game with a single to center with none out in the top of the second. Wright reached home plate on Lytle's grounder to put the Stars ahead 2-0.
Wright, a senior from Fruitland, Idaho, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Lytle, a freshman from Yukon, Okla., was 2-for-5 with a run scored, a double and a run driven in for OCU. Baker, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Connor Lynch, a senior from Marietta, Ga., was 2-for-4.
Holden Lyons, a sophomore right-hander from Edmond, Okla., suffered his first loss of the year to move to 4-1. Lyons entered in the eighth inning. Carlos Chavez, a junior righty from Rio Rancho, N.M., struck out 12 in seven innings of work for the Stars.
Les Northcutt became the winning pitcher, while Kyle Fimbrez earned a save by pitching the ninth. Lynch and Adonis Askew had hits in the ninth to get two OCU runners on and put the tying run on second in the ninth. Fimbrez worked out of the jam to preserve the win.
OCU faces Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. Friday at Jim Wade Stadium. OCU student government association has sponsored a cookout to start at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
