OCU splits twin bill with Houston-Victoria

Stars take first setback after 23-0 start

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University pounded Houston-Victoria 9-3 before falling 6-4 on Thursday at Oran Good Park in a clash of top 20-ranked teams in NAIA softball.
Jocelin Diaz crushed a three-run home run to power the Stars past 18th-ranked Houston-Victoria in the first game, while Brenda Leal-Flores hit a two-run homer to give Houston-Victoria the win in the second. OCU ran its record to 23-0 before suffering its first loss of the season.
Diaz, a senior from Yaracuy, Venezuela, added a triple to finish 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, while Carissa Turang, a senior from Whittier, Calif., was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, a run scored and a run driven in for OCU.
The Stars' Kyndra Holasek, a junior from Mustang, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Jamie Rateliff, a senior from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-4 with two doubles. McRae Cayton, a junior from Irvine, Calif., was 2-for-3.
Abby Meador, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., struck out five while allowing one hit in four innings to pick up the win.
Turang tied the game 3-3 with an RBI single to center field in the fourth inning. In the sixth, Cheyanne Terry nailed a sacrifice fly to center to put OCU on top 4-3. Diaz followed with a three-run blast.
In the seventh, Kayley Humann pounded a two-run shot past the fence for the final margin.
In the second game, Cayton socked a bases-loaded double to right that cleared the bases. OCU went up 4-2 on the play.
Houston-Victoria answered with Savannah Crittenden's two-run homer to tie the game, then Flores won the game with her two-out, two-run shot.
Cayton went 2-for-3 with three runs driven in, then Terry, a senior from Little Axe, Okla., was 2-for-3 for OCU. Diaz had a double and a run scored in a 1-for-2 performance.
Meador took the loss to move to 10-1 on the year.
The Stars meet Sooner Athletic Conference foe Southwestern Christian for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Thursday, March 26 in Bethany, Okla.
