Stars win 16th regular-season conference championship

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University snared its sixth consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball regular-season championship with an 87-44 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Thursday at the Sheaffer Center.
Oklahoma City won its 16th SAC regular-season crown. The Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I, improved to 21-2, 16-1 in conference.
Marisha Wallace, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., propelled OCU with her fifth double-double by scoring a season-best 24 points to go with 10 rebounds. Rateska Brown, a senior from Alvin, S.C., posted 22 points, three steals and six 3-pointers, and Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, reeled in 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Stars.
OCU's Yvonte Neal, a senior from Spring Valley, Calif., pitched in 11 points, while Janay Borum, a senior from Upper Marlboro, Md., added five points, 11 assists and three steals.
Coach Latricia Trammell has guided Oklahoma City to the past three league titles.
"I'm very proud of this team and their commitment to each other," Trammell said. "We have a tough conference, and to win the championship again means a great deal to our program. We are not finished yet. We reached one championship goal, and now it's time to work on another."
OCU scored 34 points off 27 Southwestern Assemblies of God turnovers. The Stars recorded a 57.9 percent field-goal percentage overall and upped that figure to 63 percent in the second period. OCU limited SAGU to 25.9 percent shooting from the field and 19.2 percent second-half shooting.
Brown hit two treys plus a jumper as the Stars built an early 12-0 advantage with 17:18 to go in the first half. Southwestern Assemblies misfired on its first four shot attempts from the floor and committed four turnovers during that time.
Neal had four points during Oklahoma City's 8-0 run that produced a 34-19 lead with 4:44 remaining in the first. Neal capped the splurge with a pair of free throws.
Albany Anderson pushed OCU's margin to 30 points. Anderson's jumper in the lane gave the Stars a 61-31 cushion at the 15:11 mark of the second.
The Stars meet John Brown (Ark.) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
