Stars face second consecutive road test

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University aims to gain a Sooner Athletic Conference road win over Oklahoma Baptist.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU dropped a 98-71 verdict to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday in Plainview, Texas. The Stars (12-7, 8-5 SAC play) stand tied with Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) for third place in the league.
Gary Inglett, a 6-foot-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., supplied OCU with 14 points and eight rebounds. He hit 6 of his 7 free throws. Inglett records 18.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game with a 53.3 percent field-goal percentage. Inglett tops the conference in rebounding.
Tharone Chilton, a 6-2 senior from Tulsa, Okla., contributed 13 points and three rebounds. Chilton adds 16.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.42 steals a contest. Ivan Jelencic, a 6-8 senior from Sibenik, Croatia, had 11 points and eight rebounds. Jelencic averages 7.4 points and 4.8 rebounds a game while averaging 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds on 64.5 percent shooting from the floor over the past four games.

OCU made its season debut in the national rankings at No. 23. The Stars were projected to finish fourth in the SAC by league coaches. Oklahoma City owns six NAIA national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
Oklahoma City leads the all-time series against Oklahoma Baptist 63-46. Oklahoma Baptist edged the Stars 78-74 on Jan. 17 at Abe Lemons Arena. After Jamil Donovan's free throw put OCU in front with 1:38 left, Cale Jackson answered with a jumper and two free throws for Oklahoma Baptist.
 
ABOUT THE BISON: Oklahoma Baptist fell 62-58 to Southwestern Assemblies of God on Thursday in Waxahachie, Texas. Marcus Price scored with 3:26 to go to give SAGU the lead for good and help send Oklahoma Baptist (17-8, 6-7 SAC) to its third consecutive loss.
Ty Allen, a 6-2 senior, propelled Oklahoma Baptist with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, two assists and four 3-pointers. Allen picks up 20.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.36 steals a game. Jackson, a 6-2 senior, had 13 points and three 3s. Jackson averages 14.0 points and 2.6 assists per game while hitting a team-high 54.4 percent from the field.
Oklahoma Baptist received votes in the latest rankings. The Bison pace the NAIA in free-throw percentage (78.7 percent) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.47-to-1). OBU was picked to finish third in the SAC in the preseason.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a 57-45 record in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of five conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Doug Tolin has guided Oklahoma Baptist to a 415-117 record and the 2010 NAIA Division I title in his 14th season at the helm. Tolin's overall coaching record stands at 735-343 in 37 years as a head coach. He will be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame this season.
