OCU outlasts Philander Smith 74-68 in John Brown Classic

Stars extend winning streak to three games.

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University defeated Philander Smith (Ark.) 74-68 Friday in the first game of the John Brown Classic at the Bill George Arena.
Allison Frey, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., was 6-for-6 from the 3-point territory and the free-throw line to lead the Stars with a season-high 24 points. OCU, No. 7 in NAIA Division I women's college basketball, stretched its winning streak to three games and improved to 3-2 on the season, while the Panthers dropped to 5-2.
The Stars had the 35-34 advantage at halftime but outscored the Panthers 21-10 in the third quarter with the lead stretching as high as 16 points. Eleven of Frey's points came in the third quarter off three 3-pointers and two free throws.
Yasmyne Jones, of the Panthers, hit a 3-pointer with 5:33 left in the fourth quarter to cut the Stars lead to 64-61. The Stars outscored the Panthers 10-7 in final five minutes of play to secure the win.
OCU relied on a balanced attack as four Stars reached double-digits in points. Leah Cheney, a junior from Ault, Colo., had a season-high 15 points with three assists and three steals.
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Catherine Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., notched 14 points and six rebounds.
Frey's perfect shooting from beyond the arc boosted her season three-point percentage to 42 percent.
Tamara Heard led the Panthers with 22 points, while Brittany Leonard added 18 points and nine assists.
OCU's Amanda Ingram, junior from Oklahoma City, registered three steals, three assists and four rebounds, while Abbey Renner added five points and three rebounds.
Samantha Stallbaumer had one points and one rebound in nine minutes of play.
The Panthers outrebounded the Stars 48-37 but OCU had the advantage in fast break points 23-16 and points in the paint 39-30.
The Stars shot 42.9 percent from the field, while the Panthers managed to shoot only 35.1 percent.
