Kruschke's buzzer beater lifts Stars past Langston 65-63

OCU pays Langston back for 85-48 setback Nov. 7

OKLAHOMA CITY – Catherine Kruschke's turnaround 3-pointer as time expired brought Oklahoma City University a 65-63 victory over Langston on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Kruschke took the inbound pass on the wing, faced the basket and fired in the buzzer-beating trey. The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 2-2 on the season in their home debut for 2015-16.
Kruschke, a senior from Dublin, Calif., powered the Stars with 28 points and 12 rebounds. She notched her third consecutive double-double. Kruschke hit the game-winning free throws in an 87-85 win over Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) on Sunday in Shreveport, La.
Daniela Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, posted 21 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, while Markeisha Johnson, a senior from Mansura, La., supplied OCU with seven points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Alexus Johnson recorded 23 points and three steals for Langston before fouling out.
Oklahoma City avenged an 85-48 loss to 18th-ranked Langston (2-1) on Nov. 7 in Langston, Okla.
"Wow," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "Just the past week the way we have played, we had to play. You go down there and lose like we did. Just the way they kept their heads up and kept working. I felt like we got better and better. We didn't have Daniela that day. We didn't have Markeisha. Both of them played great with their athleticism. Cat made every play."
The Stars built a 51-36 rebounding advantage Tuesday. Langston won the rebounding battle 55-43 on Nov. 7.
"I'm just really proud of them," Overton said. "We had a plan, and we stuck to it. We never wavered from it. If you go look at our board, that's the first thing I wrote down. We really got outrebounded the first game. It's a topic we've really talked about. It's not just our inside people, but our guards have to go rebound. Our subs who come in have to. I thought everybody paid attention to our plan."
Johnson put Langston up 59-57 with two minutes remaining in the game. Wallen answered with a tying bucket with 1:57 left, then a go-ahead 3-point play on a drive to the basket and free throw with 56 seconds showing. Johnson turned the ball over to Amanda Ingram, then fouled out with 40 seconds left.
T'Keya Mason cut OCU's lead to 62-61 on a layup with 20 seconds to go. Che'Ron Lewis put Langston in front on a lay-in, leaving the Stars 2.7 seconds left to set up the inbound to Kruschke.
The Stars meet Philander Smith (Ark.) at 6 p.m. Friday in the John Brown Classic at Siloam Springs, Ark.
