PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University took its first Sooner Athletic Conference loss of the season to Wayland Baptist (Texas) 1-0 on Wednesday at J.V. Hilliard Field.
The loss snapped freshman Kirsten Thomas' five-game shutout streak. The Stars, ranked 23rd in NAIA women's soccer, dropped to 10-4-1 and 6-1-1 in SAC play. Wayland Baptist (Texas) improved to 5-6-3 and 4-2-2 in the SAC.
The Stars goalkeeper from Keller, Texas, recorded four saves and moved to 9-4-1 on the season. OCU allowed its second goal of the year in conference play. The Pioneers' Jodian Morris scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute from an assist by Paige Rovillo. The goal was Morris' 13th of the season. Wayland Baptist halted the Stars' winning streak at five.
The Stars had a chance to tie the game in the final 30 seconds of play when Brianna Demuth, a freshman from Jenks, Okla., had a shot on goal off a Britani Soesbee corner kick. Bailey Stengler saved it to secure the win. OCU held the shot advantage at 22-9.
Stengler tallied 11 saves and improved to 5-2-2 as the Pioneer goalkeeper.
The Stars wrap up regular-season play at 1 p.m. Saturday against USAO in Chickasha, Okla.
