Stars head in winning goal in double overtime

OCU wins thriller to improve to 2-2 in conference play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University defeated Mid-America Christian 3-2 in the second overtime on Tuesday at Stars Field.
Jeffrey Matthews, a sophomore from Dallas, scored the winning goal on a header. The Stars moved to 2-8 and 2-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's soccer. The Evangels dropped to 5-6-1, 1-2-1 in the SAC.
In the 104th minute, Henrik Verolet, a freshman from Schliengen, Germany, crossed a ball into the box, and Matthews headed the ball into the goal to win the game.
The first score of the game came in 54th minute when the Evangels' Gleydson Neri scored off an assist by Devin Theisen.
The Evangels fouled a Stars player in the box in the 57th minute and Petar Djurdjevic, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, nailed the penalty shot to tie the game. The Stars took the lead in the 58th minute when Fabian Henningsen, a freshman from Hamburg, Germany, slipped the ball to Djurdjevic who in turn assisted Alexandre Taiar, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, for his third goal of the season.
Jose Dozal, of Mid-America Christian, headed the game-tying goal a minute later off a corner kick from Raphael Bonelle.
Mid-America Christian narrowly held the shot advantage 25-23. Vladimir Kalajdzic recorded eight saves and improved to 2-8 as the Stars goalkeeper. Tyler McIntosh made 11 saves and fell to 5-6-1 in the net for the Evangels.
The Stars are back in action 3 p.m. Saturday against Bacone in Muskogee, Okla.
