OCU at John Brown men’s basketball preview

Stars hope to continue conference winning streak

R.J. McGhee leads the Stars by averaging 19.8 points a game.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University puts a two-game conference winning streak on the line against John Brown (Ark.).
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City topped St. Gregory's 92-75 on Saturday at W.P. Wood Field House in Shawnee, Okla. The Stars (8-6, 4-4 Sooner Athletic Conference) reached 90 points for the sixth time this season.
R. J. McGhee, a 6-foot-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., spearheaded the OCU offense with 26 points while pulling in three rebounds and handing two assists off the bench. McGhee leads the team in points per game with 19.8 points and adds 4.3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.75 3-pointers a game.
Gary Inglett, a 6-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., notched his seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Inglett averages a double-double a game with 18.2 points and 10.5 boards a game. Tharone Chilton, a 6-2 senior from Tulsa, Okla., produced his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Chilton generates 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals a game for the Stars.

OCU has been projected to finish fourth in the SAC by league coaches. Oklahoma City owns six NAIA national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
OCU has gone 27-15 against John Brown over the years. The Stars edged John Brown 86-76 on Feb. 8, 2014 in Siloam Springs, Ark. in the most recent meeting. McGhee scored 26 points in that game.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES: John Brown fell to 14th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) 82-64 on Saturday in Plainview, Texas. The Golden Eagles (12-9, 4-4 SAC) had three players score in double figures on the night.
Max Hopfgartner, a 6-9 senior, poured in 21 points and nine rebounds. Hopfgartner leads the team in rebounds (7.7 per game) and blocks (0.75) while adding 17.1 points. Samson Olayemi, a 6-2 senior, scored 11 points with three assists and three rebounds. Olayemi leads the team in assists with 4.9 a game and produces 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds a game. DJ Feitl added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Feitl, a 6-3 junior, leads the team in points with 18.4 and steals with 1.15 a game.
John Brown was picked to finish eighth in the SAC coaches' poll.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a 53-44 record in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of five conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Jason Beschta enters his first season with the reins at John Brown. Beschta served as head coach at Oklahoma Wesleyan for three seasons. In his third season, Oklahoma Wesleyan finished as Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season co-champion and conference tournament finalist.
