OCU prevails 86-78 over Oklahoma Baptist

Stars increase win streak to 11 games

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University toppled Oklahoma Baptist 86-78 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in a battle of top 10-ranked teams in NAIA women's basketball.
Kara Partridge, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., led six double-digit scorers for second-ranked OCU with a season-high 15 points. The Stars improved to 11-1, 6-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while eighth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist dipped to 12-3, 4-2 in the SAC.
Partridge also grabbed a season-best seven rebounds. Partridge's production helped OCU top Oklahoma Baptist 46-31 in bench points. Marisha Wallace, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., provided the Stars with 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals off the pine.
"That's one of the things I said to the team after the game," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. "I just looked over and pointed at Kara and said that freshman just stepped up. She took minutes from other players, but when you have someone who is producing and doing well, you got to go with them. I was so proud of her."
Rateska Brown, a senior from Alvin, S.C., notched 13 points and two steals, while Yvonte Neal, a senior from Spring Valley, Calif., posted 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals for Oklahoma City. Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, picked up 12 points and six rebounds, and Janay Borum, a senior from Upper Marlsboro, Md., piled up 11 points, eight assists and five steals for the Stars.
OCU overcame a 14-point first-half deficit and trailed by as many as nine points in the second period. Coulibaly scored six points during a 9-0 Stars onslaught that tied the game 57-57 with 12:01 left to go. Borum dished to Coulibaly on each of those baskets.
"Sometimes she'll come down the floor, and you wonder why she did that," Trammell said of Borum. "That's one young lady I will let go. She is capable of doing great things. She's a great player. That's what got us on our run."
Partridge nailed a trey to give the Stars a 60-58 edge with 10:41 remaining. The contest featured four more ties the rest of the game. Borum set up Brown on a jumper to put the Stars up 72-70 at the 3:14 mark. OCU led the remainder of the tilt.
Charity Fowler scored to cut Oklahoma Baptist's deficit to 76-74 with 2:20 showing. Wallace hit a layup with 1:59 left to give OCU a two-possession lead.
"I thought we especially down the stretch, we went back and forth with them," Trammell said. "I thought we did a really good job of showing that mental toughness and that grit that will bring you the win. I was really pleased with our effort."
Arielle Cooper had a layup to put Oklahoma Baptist ahead 28-14 with 13:12 to go in the first half. To that point, Oklahoma Baptist sank 15 free throws.
The Stars climbed back into the game and used a 9-0 run to tie the score 33-33. Neal ignited the OCU surge with a trey, and Wallace forged the tie on a lay-in with 6:43 left in the first.
OCU faces Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
