OCU rolls to 89-56 win over Southwestern Christian

Stars keep their winning ways

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University walloped Southwestern Christian 89-56 on Thursday at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Yvonte Neal, a senior from Spring Valley, Calif., delivered 27 points for Oklahoma City. The Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I men's basketball, notched their 10th consecutive victory in moving to 10-1, 5-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Neal connected on 10 of 14 shots from the field while downing 7 of 9 3-point attempts. Marisha Wallace, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., picked up 15 points and three steals for OCU.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, provided the Stars with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Coulibaly recorded her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season. The Stars' Janay Borum, a senior from Upper Marlboro, Md., equaled her season high with 11 assists.
"She definitely was our spark," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said of Neal. "In the first we were struggling to get it going offensively. She was showing that leadership we needed."
OCU limited Southwestern Christian to a 31 percent field-goal percentage. The Stars pocketed 10 steals as Southwestern Christian committed 23 turnovers.
"I was pleased with our second half," Trammell said. "I knew we had to pick it up on defense, and that's what we talked about at halftime. In the last seven minutes, they only scored two points off the free-throw line, and that was it. The rest of the time, we held them scoreless. I was really proud of that big feat."
Southwestern Christian put together an 11-0 run to cut its deficit to 48-43 with 14:46 remaining. OCU kept the Lady Eagles at bay using Wallace's transition jumper and Neal's 3-pointer.
The Stars reeled off a 9-0 surge to widen their margin to 71-52 with 8:04 left. Catherine Kruschke went to work on the glass with two putback baskets, then Rateska Brown canned a 3 to punctuate the OCU onslaught.
Oklahoma City unleashed a 16-0 splurge to increase its advantage to a game-high 33 points at 87-54 with 3:17 left. The Stars kept Southwestern Christian off the scoreboard for 4:25.
Wallace picked off a pass and went for a 3-point play, while Brown and Cara Neighbors sank treys to complete OCU's run.
Oklahoma City squares off with eighth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
