OCU splits matches vs. Benedictine, Johnson & Wales

Macy accumulates 43 kills Saturday

Kristen Macy provided OCU with a career-high 26 kills against Benedictine on Saturday.

ATCHISON, Kan. – Oklahoma City University put away Johnson & Wales (Colo.) 25-16, 25-22, 26-24, before falling to Benedictine (Kan.) 14-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 16-14 on Saturday at Ralph Nolan Gym.
Kristen Macy supplied the Stars with a double-double in each match. Oklahoma City moved to 11-7 in volleyball.
In the first match, Macy, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., totaled 17 kills and 11 digs against Johnson & Wales. The Stars' Heather Watson piled up 34 assists and seven digs.
Kelley Shiels contributed 11 digs, and Tori Leisure chipped in seven kills and eight digs for OCU.
In the first set, Shiels dropped in an ace to put OCU ahead 6-1. Meghan Irwin's kill gave the Stars a 10-2 advantage. In the second, OCU secured the set by tallying the final three points. Irwin and Aspen Healy provided Oklahoma City with the winning point on a block.
The Stars erased a 17-12 third-set deficit to clinch the victory. Watson's kill tied the set 23-23, and Healy and Macy teamed on a block to give the Stars match point at 25-24.
In the nightcap, Macy posted a career-high 26 kills to go with 17 digs and three blocks against Benedictine. Watson, a junior from Edmond, Okla., set single-match career highs with 50 assists and four aces while picking up seven digs.
Irwin, a senior from Arlington, Texas, amassed 13 kills, 15 digs and two aces, while Leisure, a junior from Haslet, Texas, added eight kills, 10 digs and three blocks for Oklahoma City. Shiels, a senior from Edmond, Okla., picked up 16 digs and an ace, and Healy, a senior from Oklahoma City, generated eight kills and six blocks for the Stars.
In the final set, Benedictine notched five unanswered points to take a 12-7 lead. OCU responded by tying the set 13-13 on Healy's kill and getting to match point at 14-13. Benedictine took the final three points of the match as Elise Fulcher had the clinching kill.
OCU takes on Southwestern Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Bethany, Okla., in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
