Stars stumble 87-85 to Mid-America

McGhee leads OCU with 21 points

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Mid-America Christian tripped Oklahoma City University 87-85 on Thursday in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament quarterfinals at the Noble Complex.
Jamaal Crayton's jumper in the lane cut the Stars' deficit to 86-85 with eight seconds left, then Angelo Lewis hit a free throw to put Mid-America Christian back up two points.
Reggie Davis' steal at the end sealed the outcome. Mid-America will play in the conference semifinals 6 p.m. Friday.
OCU tumbled to 16-12. The final NAIA Division I rankings and national-tournament qualifiers will be unveiled 3 p.m. Wednesday. Pairings for the NAIA Division I Tournament will be revealed 8 p.m. Wednesday. The Stars will hope for an at-large bid into the national tournament.
Davis increased Mid-America Christian's advantage to 78-68 with a bucket at the 4:08 mark.
The Stars responded with free throws to slice into Mid-America's lead. Terry Johnson and Crayton canned two free throws each to cut OCU's deficit to 78-72 with 3:19 remaining. Then Crayton and R.J. McGhee nailed a pair of foul shots each to bring OCU to within 81-77 at the 2:14 mark.
Crayton cut Mid-America's edge to 85-81 by connecting on a jumper in the paint. McGhee dropped in two free throws to make the score 86-83 in favor of the Evangels with 52 seconds to go.
OCU overcame an early 8-0 deficit to take a 27-23 edge. Terry Johnson and Terence Bonhomme fired in back-to-back 3s to put the Stars up four points with 7:22 left in the first. Mid-America regained the lead on Stephen Armstrong's free throws with 3:55 remaining in the first period.
McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., supplied the Stars with 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Bonhomme, a freshman from St. Martinville, La., produced 14 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Johnson, a senior from Chicago, provided 14 points, four rebounds and two steals for OCU.
Crayton, a senior from Augusta, La., chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Terrence Walker, a senior from Jonesboro, Ark., had 10 points and five rebounds for the Stars.
