OCU tops Texas Wesleyan 85-78

Stars win third straight

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University toppled Texas Wesleyan 85-78 Saturday at the Sid Richardson Center.
R.J. McGhee provided OCU, now 16-9 overall and 12-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, with a game-high 31 points and paced the Stars to a third consecutive victory. The Stars currently sit in second place in the SAC standings with two regular-season game remaining.
The Stars got out to an early lead in the first half. Jamaal Crayton converted a four-point play at the 10:40 mark and expanded OCU's lead to 23-11.
OCU maintained its lead through the rest of the half and took a 46-36 lead to the locker room at halftime.
The Stars shot 54 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line in the first half. OCU outscored the Rams 20-8 in the paint in the first frame.
Texas Wesleyan's Deonte Jones hit a 3-point jumper and Dallas Jones followed with a fastbreak layup to cut OCU's lead to 61-56 at the 12:04 mark of the second half.
The Stars answered with a 9-0 run and rebuilt their double digit lead. 3-point jumpers from Ivan Matip and Chris Campbell bookended the run and made the score 70-56.
The Stars hit 15-of-19 from the charity stripe in the second half and cruised to the 85-78 victory.
McGhee led all scorers with 31 points and nine rebounds. Crayton followed with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Terry Johnson added 12 points and six rebounds.
The Stars will return to action against Mid-American Christian at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City.
