Stars rally past SNU 85-73

OCU comes up with game-turning 17-0 run

R.J. McGhee scored 20 points for the 14th time in 22 games for OCU on Friday.

BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University secured an 85-73 victory over Southern Nazarene on Friday at the Sawyer Center.
R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., piled up 29 points to power OCU. The Stars improved to 2-0 in men's basketball.
McGhee totaled four rebounds and five assists while sinking 10 of 14 shots from the field. McGhee nailed 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., posted 24 points while also shooting 10-for-24 from the floor for OCU.
OCU rallied from nine points down in the second half to nab the win.
"This was a good game for us," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "There times of adversity throughout the game, and our guys stayed together and adapted to the challenge. SNU is a good program, and we're very fortunate to come out on the winning side."
Southern Nazarene built on a 45-41 halftime edge. Francisco Hukill's 3-pointer provided Southern Nazarene its largest lead of the night at 60-51 with 14:33 remaining. Dartanyon Meggs had a layup to keep the Crimson Storm lead nine points at 62-53 at the 14:01 mark.
OCU flipped that deficit to an eight-point lead using a 17-0 spree. McGhee scored six of OCU's points during the run. McGhee put the Stars up 63-62 with a transition bucket off Ivan Jelencic's assist with 9:16 showing.
Evan White fired in a trey that provided OCU a 70-62 advantage to complete the 17-point turnaround with 6:39 left. Hill hit a 3 to cut OCU's lead to 72-68, but the Stars responded. Gary Inglett knocked in a jumper, and Chilton sank a 3-pointer.
Chilton downed free throws to push OCU's advantage into double digits at 81-70 with 49 seconds left. McGhee dunked to make the Stars' lead their biggest at 85-72 with 13 seconds to go.
Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., supplied OCU with nine points and 13 rebounds, while Dorion Gigger, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, added eight points. Chilton's 24 points off the bench equaled Southern Nazarene's bench points for the game.
Oklahoma City takes on North Texas at 7:30 p.m. Monday in an exhibition at Denton, Texas.
