OCU at Southern Nazarene men's basketball preview

Stars take 1-0 record into first away game of season

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University plays its first road contest of the 2014-15 season at cross-town rival Southern Nazarene.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while children 5 and under are admitted free.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU began the regular season with a 98-83 victory over Central Oklahoma on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (1-0) posted their highest offensive output since a 100-84 win over Northwood (Texas) on Jan. 6, 2014 in Oklahoma City.
R.J. McGhee, a 6-foot-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., produced a game-high 28 points, hitting 8 of 15 shots from the field and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. McGhee reached 20 points for the 13th time in 21 games for OCU.
Gary Inglett, a 6-6 senior from Ardmore, Okla., generated 15 points, 20 rebounds and two assists, pulling in six offensive rebounds. Inglett became the first Star since Ivan Matip on Nov. 3, 2012 to pull down 20 rebounds. Ivan Jelencic, a 6-8 senior from Sibenik, Croatia, added 12 points, four rebounds and two assists. Jelencic was coached by former OCU assistant Lance Madison at Lamar State-Port Arthur (Texas).

The Stars received votes in the preseason NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been predicted to take fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the preseason. OCU has won national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
OCU leads the all-time series against Southern Nazarene 38-22. In the most previous encounter between the two squads, the Stars took care of Southern Nazarene 74-60 on Dec. 14, 2013 in Bethany, Okla.
 
ABOUT THE CRIMSON STORM: Southern Nazarene makes its season debut Friday. The Crimson Storm went 18-13 and tied for third place in the Great American Conference with a 12-8 mark.
Garrett Butler, a 6-foot junior, supplied the Storm with 8.2 points as a sophomore. L.B. Willis, a 6-1 sophomore, averaged 7.7 points a game last season. Willis ranked third in the league in steals.
Southern Nazarene has been picked to finish sixth in the GAC preseason poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a record of 46-38 in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 23-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Adam Bohac enters his seventh season at Southern Nazarene. He has guided the Crimson Storm to a 125-60 record. Bohac was an assistant at SNU from 2004-07 and an assistant at Army in 2007-08.
