Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University walloped Central Oklahoma 98-83 on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., rang up 28 points to pace Oklahoma City. The Stars start men's basketball season 1-0.
McGhee buried 5 of his 7 3-point attempts to equal his career high of five 3-pointers. He previously downed five treys against St. Gregory's on Feb. 18, 2014. McGhee grabbed four rebounds.
Oklahoma City topped 95 points for the fourth time under Dionne Phelps. The Stars had their most assists (24) since totaling 24 at Mid-America Christian on Nov. 22, 2011. Oklahoma City nailed its most 3-pointers (13) since canning 13 at Rogers State on Feb. 23, 2013.
"We have to take advantage of our speed and length and guys running the floor," Phelps said. "When you got guys like Jamil Donovan who really push the basketball, you better run. If you want to get a pass, you better get out in front of him. He's the one who sets the tone and tempo for us.
"One of the things that we preach is sharing the basketball, and sharing that passion of what we do on the basketball court and trying to help make each other better."
Gary Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., posted 15 points and 20 rebounds, while Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, added 12 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Stars. Terence Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinsville, La., chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and four assists for OCU.
Inglett became the first Star to grab 20 rebounds since Ivan Matip did it against Champion Baptist (Ark.) on Nov. 3, 2012.
"He's relentless," Phelps said. "When that starts to happen, it's contagious. Last year we really needed a guy who can be really relentless on the glass. Hopefully he can keep that up all year. It's his personality, so I expect him to do that."
Donovan, a junior from Oklahoma City, supplied OCU with nine points, seven assists and three 3s. Donovan had a career-high scoring night and equaled his career high in assists.
Donovan provided OCU with its largest lead of the night at 72-53 by nailing a trey off Dorion Gigger's feed with 16:07 remaining in the game. Central Oklahoma cut its deficit to nine points, but OCU won going away.
Oklahoma City pays a visit to Southern Nazarene for a 7:30 p.m. contest Friday in Bethany, Okla.
