North Texas slips by OCU 106-100 in OT

Stars hold nine-point cushion with 2:40 to go in regulation

DENTON, Texas – North Texas escaped with a 106-100 overtime win over Oklahoma City University on Monday at the Super Pit in a men's basketball exhibition.
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., provided Oklahoma City with 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jordan Williams led North Texas with 27 points.
Chilton canned a 3-pointer that put the Stars in front 71-61 with 11:19 remaining in the second half. North Texas rallied to tie the game 73-73 on Todd Eaglin's free throws with 8:07 left.
OCU held off North Texas to create an 86-77 advantage on Jamil Donovan's free throws with 2:40 showing. The Mean Green stormed back as Armani Flannagan's layup gave North Texas an 88-87 edge at the 1:04 mark.
Chilton's free throw gave the Stars a 90-88 cushion with 14 seconds to go, but Flannagan struck for a putback of his own miss to tie the game 90-90 with two seconds remaining. The game went overtime.
In the extra period, North Texas seized the lead with a 9-2 run to start the overtime. Jeremy Combs scored the first points in overtime to spark North Texas. Greg White-Pittman's free throw gave the home team a 103-94 lead with 27 seconds showing.
Evan White sank a 3 that cut OCU's deficit to 104-100 with five seconds left, but Williams tacked on free throws to help clinch the victory for North Texas.
"As with every game, it comes down to minimizing your mistakes and defending, and I felt we did both in certain moments," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "It's early, and we're still learning, which is a good place to be right now."
R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., added 17 points and two steals, while Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Cibenik, Croatia, picked up 15 points and nine rebounds for OCU.
The Stars hit 36 of 47 free throws to outscore North Texas by four from the foul line.
OCU returns to regular-season play with a 2 p.m. contest Saturday against St. Thomas (Texas) in Houston.
