Stars hold off Baker 19-18

OCU starts season 1-2 in duals

Derek Sivertsen's 6-2 win lifted the Stars past Baker on Saturday.
NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma City University edged Baker (Kan.) 19-18 while dropping duals to Shorter (Ga.) 23-16 and Oklahoma 40-4 on Saturday at Lloyd Noble Center.
The Stars, ranked 12th in NAIA wrestling, had a 1-2 showing in duals to start the season.
Derek Sivertsen's 6-2 victory over Bryant Guillen in the 184-pound bout brought OCU the dual win over 16th-rated Baker. Sivertsen, a sophomore from Moore, Okla., pulled away from a 2-2 first-period tie with a second-period escape and a three-point near fall in the third. The Stars led 19-9 in the dual.
Billy Leone of Baker nipped Jacob King 4-3 in the 197-pound match, and Beau Bennett pinned OCU's Riley Fielder in 2:43 at 285 for the final margin.
Sivertsen's win finished a string of four consecutive wins in the dual for OCU. Zach Skates grabbed takedowns in the second and third periods of the 157-pound match to win 6-3 over Nick Haugen. OCU tied the dual score 9-9.
The Stars' Ricky McCarty came up with two near falls and a reversal to beat Connor Middleton 9-1 at 165. Jared Bass of OCU gave up the riding-time point, but had a takedown and a reversal to edge Trevor Sutton 4-3 at 174 pounds.
Aaron LaFarge pulled off the fall at 125 pounds to stake OCU to a 6-0 dual lead. LaFarge, a senior from La Habra Heights, Calif., finished off Sean Dolan in 2:05.
Against Shorter, Skates prevailed 12-4 over Kannon Madden at 157. Skates, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., gave OCU its first win of the dual after the Stars fell behind 15-0.
McCarty, a sophomore from Lawton, Okla., followed with a 4-0 decision over Wally Figaro, while Sivertsen added a 3-1 victory over Terrence Smith. Oklahoma City closed its gap to 18-16 once Jacob King accepted the forfeit at 197 pounds, but Andrew Ewers sewed up the win for Shorter with the victory in the heavyweight match.
McCarty provided OCU the highlight of its dual against Oklahoma, ranked 21st in the NCAA Division I USA Today/NWCA rankings. McCarty knocked off Alec Iacovelli 9-1 in the 165-pound match.
